World Championship of Ping Pong in London 2016

Philippines ranked 8th in the world.

World Championship of Ping Pong (WCPP) was held last January 22-24, 2016 at Alexandra Palace, North London, United Kingdom.

Philippines Number 1 Player in Table Tennis, Richard Gonzales, together with Roger Ponte and Winston Jimenez represented the Philippines in the tournament.

Gonzales did qualifying games in UK at BATTS Table Tennis Club in Harlow, Essex. Among the 90 players, only four will be selected based on their performances, and Richard made it on rank 1 on Wednesday January 27.

Gonzales beat France and China in two straight sets which brought him to the Top 32 on the first day of the tournament. On the second day, he played against Poland and Russia and which he won making him them all that made qualify in the Quarter Finals

His first win on the finals was against England and WCPP Defending Champion, Andrew Baggaley making him earn the championship. The final game of Gonzales placed him to the Top 8 in the world ranking of WCPP.

Gonzales, 44 years old and originally from Cebu is based in Manila and has been training as a full time member of the RP Team for Table Tennis. He is with the Philippine Army and plans to retire this year in the Military Services and focus on playing.

The team was recognised and warmly received by the Consul Myla Macahilig and Vice Consul Rommel Romato during the courtesy visit held Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at the Philippine Embassy London.

ENFiD-UK through the leadership of Chairman Aimee Alado supported the delegation by maximising its network in the community. Couple Dellie and David Elsom served as the team’s host during their stay in London.
